Packages and ebuilds coming soon… no, really!

I know the last update was a while ago, and I said automated packaging (and hopefully nightly builds) were going to be a priority, and they still are. The only thing I have to show for my procrastination is a bunch of virtual test systems courtesy of VirtualBox, a really cool open source virtualization tool. I have virtual machines for several major distros, and these will be the ones that Icepodder gets tested against regularly:

  • Ubuntu 7.10
  • Gentoo
  • Opensuse 10.3
  • Fedora Core 7
  • Mandriva 2008

Between a .deb, and .rpm and an ebuild, I think the major distros should be covered.

I’ve had some offers of help recently, and I’d like to thank everyone who’s testing and has submitted patches. There’s still plenty to do, so if you have some time you’d like to put towards making Icepodder better, just drop me a line. In particular, I’d like someone who could help set up a few test cases, and someone to help fix some bugs.

  1. That’s great news! I, for one, look forward to the updates! I’ve been looking forward to this and worried a bit that this project might come to an end.

  2. How about including Debian 4.0. If it works for Debian it will likely working for Ubuntu but not necessarily the inverse.

  3. I thought about Debian actually, but I haven’t heard from anyone who actually runs it. Also, if it doesn’t have an out-of-the-box install to desktop, that means I have to do some work setting it up. I’ll leave it off for now, and if anyone has issues with the .deb not working for them, I’ll deal with that then.

  4. Thanks for working on this. Juice/IcePodder is a great little tool. Wish I could help.

  5. Could you consider adding PCLinuxOS to your list of distributions. It runs well in a VirtualBox VM for test purposes.

Icepodder previously ran well but repository updates have broken it. It installs but fails to run.

I have added my support to a request that it be added to the repositories but the response was unhelpful:
“Guys if you had done a search you would have known this is very Alpha”
The discussion thread was then locked, so no further discussion!

  7. I am really glad to hear these changes are coming soon. Hopefully it will be before the Summer as I really need to get these changes implemented for a project I will be working on. Keep up the great changes.
